Alison is an artist and creative practitioner specialising in photography as her primary medium. Her work explores the intricate relationships between space, place, and the individuals who occupy them. Originally from Scotland, she is currently based in Plymouth, in the South West of England. Her location in Devon affords her convenient access to the diverse landscapes of Cornwall and the surrounding areas, including coastal regions, towns, moorlands, and woodlands. These environments frequently serve as inspiration and influence within her artistic practice.

Alison’s practice fundamentally focuses on the exploration of memory -specifically, memory as a tangible and transferable entity and the mechanisms through which it is transmitted across generations. She is especially interested in how memories serve not only as internal psychological experiences but also as externalised, material representations embedded within objects, gestures, spaces, and inherited narratives.

Alison’s use of subdued color palettes, lighting, and symbolic visual elements enhances the introspective and contemplative quality of her work. These aesthetic choices support her inquiry into memory as both a shared experience and a deeply personal one—embodying both physical and ephemeral qualities. Her practice is rooted in conceptual art photography and draws influences from fields such as memory studies and theories of identity and place.

Ultimately, Alison’s photographic practice aims to foster reflection on how memory is constructed, preserved, and transmitted over time. Her work prompts viewers to consider their own relationships with memory objects and inherited narratives, while also examining the reliability and temporality of past experiences as recalled in the present.
